Crooked

by Catherine Trieschmann

Directed by Felicia Fratus

One of the most accomplished works of the last decade is Crooked, a deeply funny, emotionally touching play by Catherine Trieschmann. The 90-minute comedy, originally performed for the Women's Project Theatre tells the story of 14 year old Laney, and her mother Elise, struggling to make a new life in Oxford, Mississippi. Still grappling with the unusual loss her father, Laney develops a friendship with a fascinating young girl named Maribel, the daughter of the pastor of "The Church of the Holly Redeemer". Sensing her mother's discomfort, Laney declares herself a “holiness lesbian", and all three women are suddenly forced to face the pain, difficulties, and delusions that they've grown to know and cling to.
