Dog Sees God

by Bert V. Royal

Directed by Felicia Fratus

An "unauthorized parody," the play imagines characters from the comic strip Peanuts as teenagers, in this cutting-edge teen comedy.

For the first time in his life, popular teen “C.B.” finds himself actively disturbed by life’s questions and dark inconsistencies. In a quest to find himself and his place in the world, C.B. turns to his life-long friends for answers. His best friend the philosopher is too stoned to provide any coherent speculation, his sister has gone Goth, his ex-girlfriend has recently been thrown in a psych ward, and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. By re-establishing a relationship with the Beethoven - who may or may not be gay - in a radical way, CB upsets the balance in his clique of friends that sets in motion a friendship that brings him comically out of the darkness of adolescence.

Winner of the 2004 GLAAD award, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead acutely examines the brutal effect high school environments can have on soul-searching youth. The play astutely explores the connection between teen violence and homophobia, and the hidden shame and insecurities often at the root of bullying.

The content of the play provides a valuable basis for discussion of issues faced by teenagers, but often avoided.
