Impossible Marriage

Mendocino Theatre Company opens Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley’s whimsically poignant comedy “Impossible Marriage” Thursday, August 5, at 8 p.m. in the Helen Schoeni Theatre, located on the campus of the Mendocino Art Center.

“Impossible Marriage” takes place in the mysterious and beautiful garden of matriarch Kandall Kingsley’s southern estate outside Savannah, Georgia. Kandall’s youngest daughter, Pandora, is set to wed worldly artist Edvard Lunt – who is over twice her age. Kandall and her older, very pregnant daughter, Floral, plot to scuttle the marriage when, unexpectedly, the groom’s son, Sidney, arrives with a note from his mother threatening suicide if the wedding takes place. Even the good Reverend Larence, who has come to marry the May-to-December couple, has secret hopes and desperate desires. Throughout this wildly funny and moving story the characters struggle with reconciling the conflict between civilized duties and their primitive desires.

“Impossible Marriage” has been directed by Ann Woodhead. The set and lighting designed by Larry Lawlor, with costumes by Kerry Hagen. The play features Sandra Hawthorne as Kandall, Oryx Battiste as Pandora, Brett McClain and Teresa Hurray will alternate the role of Floral, Jonathan Sherman plays Edvard, Milo Young plays Floral’s husband, Jonsey, Patrick Rantala portrays Sidney and Morgan Shook is the Reverend Larence.
