Picnic
by William Inge
Directed by Bob Cohen
Few writers have captured women in their social environments as William Inge has in Picnic. On a warm Labor Day weekend in a small town in Kansas, a mysterious handsome vagabond jumps from a train into the lives of two neighboring families. After Helen Potts hires the drifter, Hal, to do odds jobs around her house, he soon charms the two teenage daughters of neighbor Flo Owens – beautiful Madge and bright Millie – and brings both families to a catharsis of choosing between safety and passion. Winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize and the Critics Circle Award.
